Weekend Escape

May 17th, 2012

Memorial Day is only a week away, which is the official kickoff of summer! After a cold winter and rainy month, we may be ready for a vacation, but that doesn’t mean our wallets are! With a little research, you can find a great weekend vacation that won’t break the bank. We are here to get you started on some vacation ideas.

North Fork, Long Island NY

Travel 100 miles east of New York City and you will find the quaint towns of North Fork, Long Island. Settle down at the Shinn Estate Farmhouse, a charming inn ran by former Manhattan restaurant owners, that will serve you an amazing breakfast to start your day! It it is known for its little shops, wineries, and farms. This is a great vacation getaway for those who want a calm atmosphere, without feeling like they are the only people in town. North Fork features organic farmstands and unforgettable dining. All food is grown and produced locally. The Vine is a great wine bar for those who want to tap into their inner sommelier. This hidden treasure is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Saratoga Springs, New York

Continue further upstate and you will reach the famous horse racing city, Saratoga Springs! It offers great summer festivals, horseback riding, attractions, and casinos for those willing to press their luck! Attend the Saratoga Parrot Head Festival in June to kick off the summer. Sip Margaritas and envision yourself with a cheeseburger in paradise as you listen to the Jimmy Buffet cover band! Old Saratoga Farms is the perfect stable to test out your riding skills. For those night owls, check out one of the local pubs and restaurants for a great meal and even better happy hour. The Seven Horse Pub is where you will find a good brew and mouth-watering dinner selections. Saratoga Springs is the perfect place for the young and young-at-heart to get away for a long weekend.

The Berkshires, Massachusettes

This is a great vacation spot for both families and couples. There is so much to do here, that will have you asking “What’s next?!” Kick off the summer by attending the Berkshire International Film Festival in the beginning of June or the Berkshire’s Art Festival in July. Not your scene? The Berkshire has a great selection of antique, specialty, and outlet shops.Stop by Berkshire Home and Antiques for French country furniture, the Lee Premium Outlets for great designer deals, or Robin’s Candy Shop for old-fashion candies, fudge, and Gelatos. After you have done all your shopping, hit the beach or lake for some serious R&R to end the day. And this is just the beginning! Check out berkshires.org for more vacation ideas and deals.

Instagram Exhibit

May 16th, 2012

Smart phones and their endless amount of “apps” have really taken over throughout the past few years. One of the most popular apps is Instagram. With the variety of filters, Instagram allows you to take a simple picture and make it into so much more. Through May, there will be the first New York Instagram Exhibit at the W Hotel in Time Square featuring Instagram photographs of New York City. This is a great example of how technology is molding our lives. It also shows that you don’t have to be an artist to have a vision! Here are some pictures featured at the exhibit:

Suits are no longer for just the business professional. This season we are seeing suits in a variety of looks to “suit” your style mood. The bland and boring pant suit is being revamped in vibrant colors, lengths, and prints. Take this look from the 9-5 office to the everyday. Pair this with a basic tee and some flats to give this look a more casual feel. Here are some looks that will leave you looking sophisticated, without being so serious.

“And She’s Not Even Pretty”

May 4th, 2012

Courtney Love is well known for her music and wild woman antics, but today she is showing the world a much more vulnerable side of herself. Opening yesterday at Fred Torres Collaborations is Courtney’s autobiographical art shows titled “And She’s Not Even Pretty”. The show consist of about 45 pieces that are mostly made in colored pencils, pen, water colors, and pastels on paper. Her artwork gives great insight into how dark and fragile her life can be. Although Courtney Love is seen as extremely controversial and somewhat destructive, it is very easy to feel like you can relate to these drawings.
